      Course Description: This is a descriptive, entertaining look at many of the cultural biases at work in the job market, and specifically, in the field of massage therapy. There are definitions and descriptions, plus scenarios that help the reader understand the consequences of words, phrases, and actions. Although this course was written with the massage therapist in mind, it is good information for anyone who works with people. This course explains what cultural diversity and cultural bias are, and ways to cultivate diversity while slowly extinguishing attitudes and behaviors of cultural bias.

      Goal: To inform massage therapists about differences in people and their cultures, and how to maintain an environment of positive cultural diversity and acceptance in their practices.

      Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to master the following objective with a minimum of 70% accuracy:

      Upon course completion, the student will be able to:

      -Define Diversity

      -Compare and contrast Race and Ethnicity

      -Describe the differences between sex and gender

      -List synonyms for ‘gender bias’

      -Define culture

      -List the 4 types of culture and their characteristics

      -Identify which states in the U.S. have English as their official language

      -Compare and contrast cultures among several different countries

      -Identify culturally insensitive words and phrases

      -List common cultural mistakes that may be made in the workplace

      -Define sexual orientation

      -Describe the characteristics of ‘age discrimination’

      ---Be sure to check your state and national organizations for information about renewal.
